Question of the Moment 106

How do you feel about prequels? Do you think they are the perfect addition to a series or do you think they are pointless?

I love prequels. I think they are perfect when you are already reading the series and when you haven't started the series yet, too. Prequels usually come out after the first novel and right before the second novel. I used to find it annoying, because I always thought of prequels as teasers almost, since they are short, but still give you the essence of what is to come in that series. Now I understand their purpose... at least I think I do. When you are already reading a series it is nice to read the prequel that comes out later, because if you are continuing on past book 1 you are obviously a fan of the series so a prequel is almost like bonus features to me. Its like an understanding of what took place before what happens in book one. Also when the prequel is the first thing you read in the series then it is like a sneak peak or a teaser/excerpt. It doesn't really tell you what is going to happen in book 1, but it lets you know enough about the essence of a series so that you know whether you would actually want to read it or not. I know there have been plenty of times where I have read the prequel first and that is what makes me start the series in the first place.

So how do you feel about prequels? Hate 'em or Love 'em? Let me know in the comments below =]
